To be fed on bread and water was part of the punishment imposed under the Great Law of the province of Pennsylvania (1682) for swearing, profanity, cursing, drunkenness, and offenses of like grade.2 This is also sometimes made the diet of persons held in confinement who refuse to obey reasonable prison-rules.
