In the law of arson (g. v.), to. materially destroy the integrity of some portion of the house of another.! Burning in the hand and left cheek was anciently a mode ot punishment. * See C, 2; F, 1; T, 2. Prior to 30Geo. HI (1790), c. 48, the penalty for treason was being burned alive; ' and so, anciently, as to arson.* But victims seem to have been first deprived of sensation, as by strangling.^ As a punishment for military offenses, branding has been used to a very limited extent.
