ARCHDEACOIf. [L. Lat. arehidiaeonus, archilevita.] In Eoglisb ecclesiastical law. An ecclesiastical officer baying jurisdiction immediately subordinate to tbe bisbop, tbrougb the whole of bis diocese, or in some particular part of it. He is usually appointed by the bisbop himself, and has a kmd of episcopal authority, originally derived from the bisbop, but now independent and distinct from his.
