A New Law Dictionary and Glossary
[L. Fr. a large; L. Lat. ad largum.] In old practice. Not limited to any particular matter, point, or question. A special verdict was called a verdict at large, because it found the matter at large, [that is, it found all the facts proved without drawing any conclusions, instead of finding summarily for the one or the other party,] and left it to the judgment of the court.
