Lat. In the Roman law. The title of the wife of the emperor, (Augustus;) corresponding with queen consort in English law.

It was first given to Livia, the wife of Augustus, but finally became a common title of the mother, wife, sister, or daughter of an emperor. Tacit. Annal. i.
