Burrowmealis

Burrowmeals, {Borough mailles.) In Scotch law. Ilents paid to the king by the burgesses, {burgenses) or inhabitants of a borough, or burrow, and which went to the king's private treasury, {fisco et patrimonio regis). The ' word mea>lis, (the form of the Scotch plural,) is considered by Spelman as signifying the same thing as the old English law term firma, a ferm or farm, i, e. provisions or rent paid in provisions. It is probably the same with mail in the word blackmail, and with the modem English meal, a portion of food taken at stated mtervals. See Blackmail, Ferm, Maile.
