A New Law Dictionary and Glossary
[L. Lat. cachepolus, cacepolus.] An officer who makes arrests. Though now employed as a term of contempt for a sheriff's officer, this word seems to have been formerly used without reproach, as an ordinary official epithet.
Stat. 25 Mw. III. St. 4. c. 2. Cowell. Blount.
