In maritime law
The name of a certificate given by the collector of the port from which a vessel is about to sail, to the master, describing the vessel, cargo, and port of destination; and statin? that he has entered and cleared his vessel according to law. It is obtained on delivery to the collector of a manifest of the cargo, sworn or affirmed to by the master. The penalty in the United States for sailing without a clearance is five hundred dollars.
