A New Law Dictionary and Glossary
In English practice. A nile granted (or rather a certificate of the Court of Queen's Bench having granted a rule) to a prisoner, permitting him to go beyond the rules, (that is, the limits) of the prison for the purpose of transacting his business. So called because granted only for a day; the prisoner being required to return to the prison at or before nine o'clock of the evening of the day for which the rule was granted.
