A New Law Dictionary and Glossary
[Lat. debitum, from debere, to owe.] That which one owes; that which one ought to pay, or do to, or for another.* Owed, or owing, as distinguished from ayable. A debt is often said to be due from a person, where he is the party owing it, or primarily bound to pay, whether the time for payment has, or has not arrived.
