Earldom

[L. Lat. eomitatus,'] The office, jurisdiction, or dignity of an earl, {comes). An earldom onginally consisted in dignity, office, and the possession of lands.

It is now a mere personal dignity, without office annexed, and independent of any land. See Earl, Comitatus.
