Grain

[Lat.^a»ttm.] The twentyfourth (anciently the thirty-second) part of a penny-weight, or weight of an English penny. By the statute Compositio Mensurarum, 61 Hen. III., it was ordained that the penny sterling should weigh thirty-two grains of corn from the middle of the ear; {panderabit iriginta et duo grana frumenti in medio spica,) These natural grains were afterwards reduced to twenty-four artificial grains.
