Sax. [from gritk, peace, and stol, a seat or chair.J In Saxon law. A seat, chair, or place of peace; a sanctuary; a stone withm a church gate, to which an offender might flee. So called in an old rhyming charter of King Athelstan to the chapel of St. Wilfrid of Rippon: And within yair Kyrke yate, At ye Stan yat GHthstoU hate.
