Appanage. [L. Lat. appanagium, appenagium, q. v.] In old French law. A provision for the support of younger sons; an allowance made to younger branches of a sovereign house, out of the revenues of the country, generally together with a grant of public domains; the provision of lands or feudal superiorities formerly assigned by the kings of France for the maintenance of their younger sons.
