[L. Lat. appropriare, ap* pruare; L. Fr. fffprover, apprower, appruer^ In old English law. To take to one's own separate use, (ad proprium); as by enclosing land that was before common or waste. In modem phrase, to improve land. To approve common or waste land, is to enclose and convert it to the purposes of husbandry, which the owner might always do, provided he left common sufficient for such as were entitled to it. Stat.
