[from Lat. cessio, q. v.] A giving up, relinquishment or abandonment of a right, or of property. See Abandonment. In the civil law. A giving up, surrender or assignment of goods to, or for the benefit of creditors.

In ecclesiastical law
A giving up, or vacating a benefice, by accepting another without a proper dispensation.
