In the United States laws, students in the military academy at West Point are styled “cadets;” students in the naval academy at Annapolis, “cadet midshipmen.” Rey. St. §§ 1309, 1512. In England. See Graduate. Naval cadets, by settled usage which has the force of law, are appointed by certificates under the hand and seal of the secretary of war. They are inferior officers who, for purposes of instruction, may be required to serve as officers, non-commissioned officers, or privates.^
