Definitions from Case Law

From 73 U.S. 611 - Provident Institution v. Massachusetts · 1867Most cited · 122 citing opinions

Deposits, as the word is employed in that section, are the sums received by the institution from depositors without regard to the nature of the funds. They are not capital stock in any sense, nor are they even investments, as the word is there used, which simply means the sums received, wholly irrespective of the disposition made of the same or their market value.

Court decisions citing the 2 opinions that defined “deposits” — 166 in all, by decade. Counts are citations to the defining cases as a whole, not verified uses of the term. The dip in the most recent years is a data-coverage gap, not a real trend — our corpus holds fewer opinions from the latest years.
