Lat. [from centum, a hundred.] A hundred men; hundred men. The number of men enrolled for military service from each district, among the ancient. Germans, and which afterwards became their distinctive name. Centeni ex singulis pagis sunt; idque ipsum inter suos vocantur; et quod primo numerus fuit jam nomen et honor est; there are a hundred [fighting] men ixfim each district; and they are called the same thing [i. e. hundred] among their companions; and what was at first a mere number is now a name and a c Qstinction.
