A Dictionary of Law

William C. Anderson · 1889

As used in the copyright law, does not include sheets of paper exhibiting tabulated or methodically arranged information. In the Copyright Act of 1790, where the word was first used, a chart was a marine map, as is shown by all the dictionaries of the time. A definition covering such a sheet of paper was introduced into Worcester's dictionary in 1864, and into Webster's in 1865. The word, in the present act, is separated from the word "book," and kept with the word "map" and other words of artistic import, thus showing an intention to continue its use in the sense of a chart of the class of maps, and other works of art.* See Copyright. Compare Map.
