In modem law. A grant in writing of certain privileges and franchises, (usually to a corporation) b^ the supreme power of a state; an act of mcorporation.
In this sense, the original meanmg of the term charter as applied to g^ranta by the sovereign to individuals or corporate bodies is, with some modification, retained. See Charter, supra.
