i Convenience, privilege, profit, gain; popularly, goods, wares, merchandise. Within the meaning of the constitution of Massachusetts "commodities" embraces everything which may be the subject of taxation,— including the privilege of using a particular branch of business or employment: as, the business of an auctioneer, of an attorney, of a tavern-keeper, of a retailer of liquors.''
