By grace; not of right. Also written ex gratia. A LATERE (Lat. laius, side).
In Respect to Property Rights. (1) Collateral.
Used in this sense in speaking of the succession to property.

In Ecclesiastical Law. Apostolic. A legate a latere is one having full powers to represent the pope as if he were present.

A LfBELLIS (Law Lat.) An officer who had charge of the libelli or petitions addressed to the sovereign. Calv. Lex. A name sometimes given to a chancellor (cancellarius) in the early history of that office. Spelman, voc. "Cancellarius."
