ARGENTARII (Lat argentum).
Moneylenders.
Called, also, nummularii (from nummus, coin) mensarii (lenders by the month). They were so called, whether living in Rome or in the country towns, and had their shops or tables in the forum. Argentarius is the singular. Argentarium denotes the instrument of the loan, approaching in sense to our note or bond. Argentarius miles was the servant or porter who carried the money from the lower to the upper treasury to be tested.
