An officer appointed to give inf eftment. In certain cases it is the duty of the sheriff, as king's bailie, to act. Generally, any one may be made bailie by filling in his name in the praecept of sasine. A magistrate possessing a limited criminal and civil jurisdiction. Bell, Diet.
