The land or estate so held is called a censive; the tenant is a, eensitaire. It was originally a tribute of considerable amount, but became reduced in time to a nominal sum. It is distinct from the rentes. The cens varies in amount and in mode of payment. Payment is usually in kind, but may be in silver.
