The Cyclopedic Law Dictionary

An issue taken upon some matter aside from the general issue in the case. Thus, for example, a plea by the criminal that he is not the person attainted, when an interval exists between attainder and execution, a plea in abatement, and other such pleas, each raise a collateral issue.
