The Cyclopedic Law Dictionary

The fraternity of a religious house, as of an abbey or priory. The word though in common usage restricted to companies of women, properly embraces companies of either men or women living together in the discipline of a religious order, either monks or nuns. The house occupied by such a community, a monastery or nunnery; an abbey {q. v.)
