The Cyclopedic Law Dictionary

The expression used by a testator to denote a person or thing, Instead of the name itself. A bequest of the farm which the testator bought of a person named, or of a picture which he owns, painted by a certain artist, would be a designation of the thing. A legacy " to the eldest son" of A. would be a designation of the person.
