The Cyclopedic Law Dictionary
In Old Law. The lord or proprietor of land, who, under the feudal system, retained the dominion or ultimate property of the feud, or fee of the land; while his grantee, who had only the possession and use of the land, was styled the "feudatory," or "vassal," which was only another name for the tenant or holder of it. In Modern Law. The lessor of lands or tenements. Not the lord of the soil, but the person between whom and the tenant the relation of landlord and tenant exists.
