In American law
The act of awarding a contract. This term is much used in the United States, and most frequently in relation to contracts to construct railroads, canals, or other mechanical works. When such an undertaking has reached the point of actual construction, a notice is generally given that proposals will be received until a certain period, and thereupon a letting out, or award of portions of the work to be performed according to the proposals, is made.
