A party against whom a libel has been filed in proceedings in an ecclesiastical court or in admiralty, corresponding to the defendant in a common-law suit.

Lihellus supplex, a petition, especially to emperor, all petitions to whom must be in writing. L. 15, Dig. in jus voc. Libellum rescribere, to mark on such petition the answer to it.
