The Cyclopedic Law Dictionary
The true and faithful obedience of a subject to his sovereign, of a citizen to his government. It signifies, also, the territory of a sovereign. See "Allegiance." LIGEANTIA EST QUASI LEGIS ESSENtia; est vinculum fidei. Allegiance is, as it were, the essence of the law; it is the bond of faith.
