The Cyclopedic Law Dictionary
One whose occupation it is to navigate vessels upon the sea. Surgeons, engineers, clerks, stewards, cooks, porters, and chamber maids, on passenger steamers, when necessary for the service of the ship or crew, are also deemed mariners, and permitted as such to sue in the admiralty for their wages.
