The Cyclopedic Law Dictionary
One appointed to administer the estates of intestates where there is no person interested in them competent and willing to take the administration. He is generally a standing officer, or an officer of court acting ex officio, as the sheriff in Arkansas (23 Arki 304), or the clerk of the superior court in Georgia (20 Ga. 775); but the term is also applied to an administrator appointed for the occasion in default of any application for administration.
