Reputation

The opinion generally entertained in a community regarding any matter. Thus, certain matters of pedigree may be proved by common repute. Most commonly used in the sense of personal reputation, the opinion entertained regarding a man in a community. "Reputation" is to be distinguished from "character" (q. v.) Character is what a person is; reputation is what he is supposed to be. Character is injured by temptations and wrongdoings; reputation, by slanders and libels.
