Lat. [Fr. denier,'] An English penny. By the statute called Compositio Mensurarum, 51 Edw. I., it was declared that the penny sterling of England ^denarius Angltce qui nominatur sterlin^us,) should weigh 32 grains of corn from the middle of the ear, and 20 pennies [penny weights] should make an ounce, and 12 ounces a pound.
