A certain number of words, established by usage or law, as a unit of measurement for estimating the length of a document. Originated in some estimate of the number of words that a folio ought to contain. The number has varied, in different jurisdictions, from seventy-two, to ninety, and one hundred. By the act of February 26, 1853, § 3, a folio is one hundred words, counting each figure a word."
