In old European law. A thief caught in the act of going away with stolen goods. FEHMGERICHTE (or VEHMGERICHT). An irregular tribunal which existed and flourished in Westphalia during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. From the close of the fourteenth century its importance rapidly diminished, and it was finally suppressed by Jerome Bonaparte in 1811.
