Bouvier's Law Dictionary and Concise Encyclopedia

John Bouvier; revised by Francis Rawle · 1914

An officer In the exchequer who examines the sheriff’s estreats, comparing them with the records, and apposeth (interrogates) the sheriff what he says to each particular sum therein. Coke, 4th Inst. 107; Blount; Cowell, Foreigne. The word is written opposer, opposeth, by Lord Coke; and this signification corresppnds very well to the meaning given by Blount, of examiner (Interrogator) of the sheriff’s accounts.
