In Roman Law. A person who had been released from a state of servitude. See LiBEExmE. The term is frequently applied to the emancipated slaves in the southern states. By the fourteenth amendment of the constitution, citizenship was conferred upon them; 394. The fifteenth amendment protects the elective franchise of freedmen and others of African descent; and this was the object of its adoption; Cooley, Const. Lim. 752.
