A permission given in the army and navy to an officer or private to absent himself for a limited time. FURNAGE (from furnus, an oven). A sum of money paid to the lord by the ten- 'ants, who were bound by their tenure to bake at the lord's oven, for the privilege of baking elsewhere. The word is also used to signify the gain or profit taken and received for baking.
