A capital punishment for crime in some countries by strangulation with an iron collar compressed by means of a screw, or by severing the spinal cord in like manner.

A mode of capital punishment practised in Spain and Portugal formerly by a simple strangulation. The victim, usually in a sitting posture, is fastened by an iron collar to an upright post wid a knob, operated by a screw or lever, dislocates the spinal column, or a small blade severs the spinal cord at the base of the brain.
