In Roman law. Those who, having been thought dead, unexpectedly returned. They were not per- I, at the beginning of words having the first syllable In, commonly denotes a derivation from the Latin, as E, in a similar position, indicates a derivation from the French. But I and E were formerly, in many instances, used as initial letters indifferently, and in some words the practice continues to be retained. See E. I. E.
