As early as May 19,.1796, an act was passed by congress, providing an eventual indemnification to citizens of the United States for depredations committed by Indians in taking or destroying their property; 1 St L. 472. Other acts of a similar character were passed from time to time. By the act of March 3, 1891, congress conferred on the court of claims jurisdiction of claims for property taken and destroyed by Indians.
