In old English law
A charter, deed or writing. Carta de foresta: the charter of the forest. Carta non est nisi vestimentum donationis: the deed is nothing but the clothing of the gift. Carta partita de affreightamento: a charter-party of affreightment. Carta perdonationis: a charter of pardon.
