In old English law

A penny. Denarius Dei: Gtod's penny; earnest money, f orraex-ly given and received by the parties to contracts, to bind the contract so called because the money was given to God, that is, to the church, or to the pool*, v. Argentum Dei; Earnest; Money of adieu. Denarius tertius comitatus: the third penny of the county; the third part of the profits arising from the county courts, which were reserved to the comes, or earl, as his official stipend.
