In old English law

Benefit; advantage; work; labor. Opus maniflcum: labor done by the hands: manual labor. In the civil law. Work; labor; a thing made or done by labor. Opus locatnm: a work let out. Opus novum: anew work; something newly built upon land, or taken from a work already erected. Or. In written instruments, statutes, etc., frequently construed to mean "and," where such construction is necessary to give effect to the intention.
