A formal word in the commencement of deeds, probably derived from the Roman practice; a formal word invariably used in the address of writs, which commenced in the epistolary form. In the Roman law. A formal word in the commencement of deeds and charters, which, during the later periods of the empire, were written in an epistolary form.
