A Law Dictionary and Glossary
One who acts in the place of another; one who is authorized to perform the functions of another. In English ecclesiastical law. The incumbent of an appropriated benefice, — in effect a perpetual curate with a standing salary, the parson or other appropriator over him having the right to the ecclesiastical dues of the parish.
